9 Types Of Seizures Flashcards
Start in a particular part of brain. Names are based on the part. Causing physical & emotional fx. About 60% with epilepsy have this. Partial seizure.
1. Focal seizures
Change how senses read the world. May make fingers, arms, or legs twitch. Might also see flashes or feel dizzy, sweaty and nauseated.
1(a). Simple Focal Seizures
Usually happen in the part of brain that controls emotion and memory. May lose consciousness but still look like being awake. Might gag, laugh, cry.
1(b). Complex Focal Seizures
Start in one part of brain and spread to nerve cells on both sides. Might cause some of same physical symptoms as (2) Generalized Seizure.
1(c). Secondary Generalized Seizures
Happen when nerve cells on both hemispheres of the brain misfire. Can make the body having muscle spasms, black out, or even falling.
2. Generalized Seizures
Most noticeable. Body stiffens, jerks, and shakes; lose consciousness. Sometimes, losing control of bladder and bowels. Usually last 1-3 mins.
2(a). Tonic-clonic (or grand mal) Seizures
Muscles have spasms, which often make face, neck, and arm muscles jerk rhythmically. May last several minutes.
2(b). Clonic Seizures
Muscles in arms, legs, or trunk tense up. Usually last <20s and often happen when asleep. If standing, can lose balance.
2(c). Tonic Seizures
Muscles suddenly go limp. Head may lean forward. If holding something, might drop. If standing, might fall. Usually last <15s but some have a row of.
2(d). Atonic Seizures
Muscles suddenly jerk as if having been shocked. May start in same part of brain as an atonic seizure, and some have both myoclonic & atonic.
2(e). Myoclonic Seizures
Seem disconnected from others around and don't respond to them. May stare blankly into space, and eyes might roll back. Most common in children <14.
2(f). Absence (or petit mal) Seizures
