matter

Anything that has mass and takes up space (volume)

mixture

A combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined, like rocks mixed together.

solution

A mixture that forms when one substance dissolves another, like salt water.

compound

A substance made up of atoms of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds. Example: Water (H20)

element

A pure substance made of only one kind of atom

homogenous

uniform, the same through out

heterogenous

not similar; very different; mixed together

solid

Definite shape and volume

liquid

A state of matter that has no definite shape but has a definite volume.

gas

A state of matter with no definite shape or volume

melting

The temperature at which a solid becomes a liquid

freezing

The change of state from a liquid to a solid

vaporization

The change of state from a liquid to a gas

evaporation

A change from a liquid to a gas at a temperature that is lower than the boiling point. (at the surface of a liquid)

boiling

The temperature at which a substance changes from a liquid to a gas.(entire liquid)

condensation

The change of state from a gas to a liquid
