Emt Drug Quiz Flashcards
acetaminophen
Tylenol
Acetaminophen Class
analgesic, antipyretic
acetaminophen description
Clinically proven to treat pain and reduce fever with little effect on platelet function
acetaminophen indication
pain reducer and/or fever reducer
acetaminophen contraindication
hypersensitivity, liver failure, children under 3 years
acetaminophen precaution
Patients with known liver disease, children under 12 years old with arthritic conditions, alcoholism, malnutrition, and thrombocytopenia (low platelet count)
acetaminophen side effect
Liver damage in large doses, rash, angioedema
acetaminophen dose (ped)
15 mg/kg PO
acetaminophen dose (adult)
500-1000mg PO
albuterol
Ventolin, Proventil
albuterol class
bronchodilator, beta 2 agonist (more lung oriented, less cardiac oriented)
albuterol description
specific synthetic sympathomimetic that causes bronchodilation, but less cardiac effects and reduces mucus secretion, pulmonary capillary leaking, and edema in the lungs during allergic reaction
albuterol indication
relative airway disease exacerbation (asthma, COPD), allergic reaction with wheezing, bronchospasm
albuterol contraindication
known hypersensitivity
albuterol precaution
Vital signs and breath sounds must be monitored; use caution with elderly, cardiac, or hypertensive patients, HR > 150 bpm in adults, 200 in children, significant cardiac history
albuterol side effects
tachycardia (increased heart rate), anxiety, nervousness, nausea/vomiting, cough, tremors, dizziness
albuterol dose <1 year
1.25 mg via neb, O2 6-8 L/min
albuterol dose 1-6 year
1.25 mg-2.5 mg via neb, O2 6-8 L/min
albuterol dose 6-14 year
2.5 mg via neb, O2 6-8 L/min
albuterol dose >15 year
2.5-5.0 mg via neb, O2 6-8 L/min
KEY NOTE about albuterol
Administration restricted to only patients who already have a doctor's order with a prescription for the medication
ibuprofen
Advil, Motrin
ibuprofen class
NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug)
ibuprofen description
antipyretic, analgesic; inhibits platelet aggregation and increases bleeding time
ibuprofen indication
reduce fever, relieve minor to moderate pain
ibuprofen contraindication
known hypersensitivity to NSAID, recent GI bleed, renal insufficiency, patients taking anticoagulants
ibuprofen precaution
hypertension, cardiac decompensation
ibuprofen side effect
rash, tinnitus (ringing in ears), headaches, dizziness, drowsiness, abdominal pain, nausea/vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, heart burn; can cause more bleeding than normal because it reduces the ability of blood to clot
ibuprofen dose adult
400-800 mg PO
ibuprofen dose ped
10 mg/kg PO; DO NOT use on infants <6 months
oxygen class
medical gas
oxygen description
odorless, colorless, tasteless gas
oxygen indication
hypoxia, anticipated hypoxia, any patient with a need to improve respiratory efficiency
oxygen contraindication
COPD patient that is not hypoxic and used for a prolonged period of time
oxygen precaution
supports combustion; because it's compressed gas in cylinders, do not drop, throw, or cause damage to tank
oxygen side effect
dry oxygen can irritate mucous membrane
oxygen dose Nasal Canula
1-6 L/min
oxygen dose NRB
10-15 L/min
oxygen dose Bag Valve Mask
15L/min
