Heart Anatomy Flashcards
Chordae tendinae (function)
hold valves in place; "heart strings"
Left atrium (function)
receives oxygenated blood from lungs
Right atrium (function)
receives deoxygenated blood from body
Left ventricle (function)
pumps oxygenated blood to body
Right ventricle (function)
pumps deoxygenated blood to lungs
Septum (function)
separates left and right sides of heart
Pericardium
double serous membrane; encloses the heart
Visceral pericardium
pericardial layer closest to the heart; aka epicardium
Parietal pericardium
outer pericardial layer
Epicardium (heart wall)
aka visceral pericardium; outer layer of heart wall
Myocardium
middle layer of heart wall; thickest layer; mostly cardiac muscle
Endocardium
inner layer of heart wall; made up of simple squamous epithelium
Valves (function)
flaps of connective tissue that prevent backflow of blood; keep blood flowing in one direction
Bicuspid (mitral) valve (description)
between left atrium and left ventricle
Tricuspid valve (description)
between right atrium and right ventricle
Pulmonary semilunar valve (description)
between right ventricle and pulmonary artery
Aortic semilunar valve (description)
between left ventricle and aorta
Aorta (function)
oxygenated blood leaves left ventricle toward body
Pulmonary arteries (function)
oxygen-poor blood leaves right ventricle towards lungs
Vena cava (function)
superior and inferior; deoxygenated blood from body enters right atrium
Pulmonary veins (function)
oxygen-rich blood from lungs enters left atrium
