Hosa Biomedical Laboratory Science Flashcards
Agar Plate
A petri dish filled with a jello-like nutrient material used to grow bacteria upon.
Agar Slant Tube
solidified agar at an angle to get a flat inoculating surface, used to store bacteria cultures.
Autoclave
a device for heating substances above their boiling point
Automatic Pipet
may be made for any volume and is equipped with a plunger that controls the delivery of fluid
Beaker
cylindrical glass container with a pouring lip, used especially in laboratories
Bottle
Plastic or Glass container used to store liquid or gas for an experiment
Buret Clamp, Coated Jaws
claws that hold burets, coated with plastic or ruber
Centrifuge
an apparatus that uses centrifugal force to separate particles from a suspension
Concave Microscope Slide
curving in or hollowed inward microscope slide
Disposable Pipet
disposable object used to transfer small volumes of liquid
Erlenmeyer Flask
used to heat and store liquids advantage is that the bottom is wider than the top so it will heat quicker because of the greater surface area exposed to the heat
Florence Flask
used for heating substanes that need to be heated evenly. bulbous bottom allows the heat to distribute through the liquid more evenly. mostly used in distillation experiments
Forceps
an extractor consisting of a pair of pincers used in medical treatment (especially for the delivery of babies)
Full-face Shield
lightweight face shield that provides full face protection
Fume Hood
ventilation device designed to limit exposure to hazardous or toxic fumes, vapors, or dusts
Funnel
a conically shaped utensil having a narrow tube at the small end
Gloves
handwear: covers the hand and wrist
Graduated Cylinder
thin, cylindrical container used to measure and pour exact amounts of a liquid
Graduated Pipet
glass; common sizes are 10mL, 25mL; used to measure solution in volumes; less accurate than a volumetric pipet.
Hot Water Bath
in the science laboratory, usually a large beaker of water heated on a hot plate; used to heat test tubes that contain a flammable liquid such as alcohol
Hot Plate
a lab tool used to heat substances
Incubator
apparatus consisting of a box designed to maintain a constant temperature by the use of a thermostat
Inoculating Loop
instrument used to pick up and transfer bacteria
Laboratory Balance
The tool used to find mass
Laminar Flow Hood
contained, controlled area designed to produce laminar columns of sterile, pyrogen-free air as a sterile environment for aseptic production of parenteral products.
Magnetic Stir Bar
small white oblong Teflon-covered magnet, used to stir solutions when placed on a stir motor
Medicine Dropper
used to tranfer small amounts of liquid; medicine
Microcentrifuge
A centrifuge used in laboratories to separate materials from small samples (especially of biological material)
Microcentrifuge Tube Rack
rack that holds microcentrifuge tubes
Microcentrifuge Tubes
tubes with capacities from 250 microliters to 2 milliliters
Micropipetter
an instrument used to measure very tiny volumes, usually less than a milliliter
Micropipet Tips
tips of micropipets
Monocular Microscope
which microscope has only one ocular lens
Peg Rack
dries laboratory glassware
Petri Dish
a shallow, circular, glass or plastic dish with a loose-fitting cover over the top and sides, used for culturing bacteria and other microorganisms
pH Paper
indicator describing the pH level of a solution
Pipet-aids
suction devices that are used to either suck liquids into or expel liquids out of pipettes.
Pipet pump, blue
holds up to 2 ml.
Pipet pump, green
holds up to 10 ml
Pipetting Device
accurately fills and dispenses liquids from pipette
Pipetting Bulbs
rubber bulb used to suck stuff up the pipet, fill it up easily
Safety Glasses
Safety Glasses Eye protection to protect eyes from the impact of foreign objects.
Scalpel
a thin straight surgical knife used in dissection and surgery
Serological Pipet
Used in cell culture
Stirring Rod
to stir combinations of materials and to use in pouring liquids
Stoddard Clamp Test Tube Holder
Holds test tubes used in experiment.
Swab
cleaning implement consisting of absorbent material fastened to a handle
Test Tube
a tube of thin, transparent glass that is closed at one end, used in chemical experiments
Test Tube Brush
Used to clean out test tubes.
Test Tube Rack
Holds test tubes.
Transfer Pipet (Beral Pipet)
Plastic, qualitative pipet that is used to dispense chemicals; often used in place of a dropper
Thermometer
Used to measure temperature
Volumetric Flask
used to make solutions of known concentration, accurate liq. vol. measurement
Volumetric Pipet
glass; common sizes are 10 mL, 25 mL; used to measure solution volumes accurately; must not be heated.
Weighing dishes/boats
Used to hold substances in while being weighed.
