Network Cables Flashcards ionicons-v5-c

Network Cable

Used to connect one network device to another network device.

Twisted-Pair Cable

Cables made of copper wires that are twisted around each other and are surrounded by a plastic jacket (such as traditional home phone wire).

Fiber-Optic Cable

A cable that transmits data at close to the speed of light along glass or plastic fibers. This is more expensive than copper but provides better speed and operational range.

Coaxial Cable

Insulated copper wire; used to carry high-speed data traffic and television signals.

Shielded Wire

A wire that has a layer of protection to reduce interference.

Unshielded Wire

A wire that has no protection against interference.

CAT 1

Used as a telephone cable. Has a data rate of 1Mbps or less

CAT 2

Used as a token ring network cable. Has a data rate of 4Mbps or less.

CAT 3

Category 3 wire, a TIA/EIA standard for UTP wiring that can operate at up to 10 Mbps. Has a range of up to 100m

CAT 4

Category 4 wire, a TIA/EIA standard for UTP wiring that can operate at up to 16 Mbps. This wire is not widely used, except in older Token Ring networks. Has a range of up to 100m

CAT 5

Category 5 wire, a TIA/EIA standard for UTP wiring that can operate at up to 100 Mbps. Has a range of up to 100m

CAT 5e

Category 5e wire; TIA/EIA standard for UTP wiring that can operate at upto 1 Gbps at a range of up to 100m.

CAT 6

Category 6 wire; TIA/EIA standard for UTP wiring that can operate at up to 10 Gbps at a range of 100m.

CAT 6a

Category 6a wire; augmented CAT 6 UTP wiring that supports 10Gbps at the full 100-meter distance between a node and a switch.

CAT 7

Supports 10-Gbps networks at 100-meter segments; shielding for individual wire pairs reduces crosstalk and noise problems. CAT 7 is not a TIA/EIA standard.

RJ-45

a port that looks like a large phone jack and is used by twisted-pair cable to connect to a wired network adapter or other hardware device. RJ stands for registered jack.

RJ-11

A phone line connection or port found on modems, telephones, and house phone outlets.

F-type

Twisted onto the cable.Used to create cable and satellite TV connectionsUsed to connect a cable modem to a broadband cable connection

MT-RJ

- fiber optic connector- latched push pull connector-small form factor for high packed density- smallest can send and receive fiber at the same time

BNC cable

A miniature quick connect/disconnect connector used for coaxial cable. It features two blade-like lugs on the female connector. Connection is achieved with only a quarter turn of the coupling nut.
