Whmis Flashcards
3 key elements of WHMIS program
labels, material safety data sheet (msds), worker education & training
chronic exposure
repeated exposure to a substance over a long period of time
decant
transferring a controlled product from a large (bulk) container to smaller container for convenience and ease of use
exposure
a condition of contact between a person and a hazardous substance. contact may be mouth, skin or lungs, eyes or digestive tract
msds
Material Safety Data Sheet -provide hazard and precautionary information on controlled products
oxidizer
a substance which readily yields oxygen to stimulate combustion. oxidizers are not compatible with flammable materials
personal protection equipment
devices worn by workers to protect against hazards in the environment; for example, rubber gloves, safety glasses, dust masks
precautionary measures
statements which instruct the user on how to handle the controlled product for maximum safety. examples: keep container tightly closed, or keep away from heat
risk phrase
a statement identifying a hazard that may arise from the intended use of or exposure to a controlled product. examples: heating may cause explosion, or rapidly absorbed through skin
